First Time Ocean Racer Report - Believe in Yourself for Success
One of the swimmers I work with recently took part in her first big ocean race. Angela went through a lot to get to the start of the race (like a fear of swimming in the ocean). She did the work in the pool, improved her technique and her fitness, and even more important, improved her belief in herself as a swimmer. She is allowing me to share her race report from her first race with you... When the race official "literally" drew a line in the sand a massive wall of people manned the line and I was immediately pushed to the back of the pack!

Why Do You Swim?

Do you swim to relax, or are you swimming for fitness? Maybe you are doing it for more than just fitness, you are swimming to do swimming races, or to do a triathlon? Why do you swim, what kind of things do you do when you swim, and what are the results. What works - and does not work - for you and your swimming routine?

Better Freestyle Swimming By Swimming On Your Side
When we learned to swim freestyle as children, most of us swim flat in the water, with little or no hip rotation as our arms are doing the majority of the work. Many triathletes and open water swimmers have found it necessary to change their stroke and swim more on their sides in order to conserve energy, swim faster, and get through potential rough water conditions with greater ease. Swimming freestyle on your side may seem like a foreign concept at first. But with consistent practice, you will be able to swim more efficiently, resulting in faster swim times and greater energy conservation.

Should Flotation Devices or Life Jackets Be Used in Swim Lessons?
When properly used, a progressive flotation device will make a huge difference, from developing confidence, to learning skills more efficiently, to increasing safety. Photo by Jim Reiser"My son is on a swim team and doesn't need a life jacket. Why does he have to wear a life jacket during swimming lessons?" I responded, "He doesn't have to, but my number one responsibility is to make sure that your child is safe when in our care. To me, there was one of two reasons for this phone call.
