Just as automobile maintenance keeps your car running at its best, pool heaters must be tuned up annually to ensure the heater is working properly and to extend the life of the heater.
This season, before running your Hayward propane pool heater, have it checked thoroughly. This includes a check for insects, rodents and rust, which may seem a simple problem but one that can become a big problem when the heater causes a fire.
Pool heater damage can also be caused from winter idleness and chemical imbalances, which can cause rust problems and interior heater corrosion.

Grillman offers these pool maintenance tips:
- Run your Hayward propane pool heater at least an hour a week during the swimming season, even during the heat of summer to ensure the parts keep operating well. Letting a heater sit idle is asking for problems because insects or rodents can nest in the heater. Running it weekly will burn any nest out before it becomes a problem.
- Keep the area around the heater free and open. Be sure no pool toys are left on top of it, or they could burn or melt down. Both children and adults should never stand in front of the heater while its being lit because of the risk of getting burned.
